Brownsville, Texas, was abuzz with excitement in January 1929 as news spread about the rapidly developing possibilities surrounding the city’s international airport. The PanAmerican Airways had announced plans to offer east air mail service to the West Indies, Yucatan, and eventually Central and South America. The airline’s route would touch down in Merida, Yucatan, via Brownsville, using the Mexican Aviation company lines through Mexico. This move would provide direct service to the central and western sections of the country through Mexico to Merida, the West Indies, and Central and South America.
