Tulsa paramedic Sara Nicole Hogsett, 26, has admitted to stealing and tampering with life-saving drugs meant for patients, replacing powerful narcotics with saline solution while using the stolen medication herself. The crime, unfolding between April 2016 and May 2016, strikes at the heart of public trust in emergency medical responders.
Hogsett, assigned to ambulances in the Tulsa area, systematically removed fentanyl, morphine, and diazepam from their sealed vials. After injecting herself with the controlled substances, she refilled the vials with saline to conceal the theft. The tampering went undetected until federal investigators from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began examining discrepancies in drug inventory.
Confronted by FDA agents, Hogsett confessed on the spot. She admitted to diverting the medications for personal use, compromising the integrity of emergency care and putting countless patients at risk. Each vial she altered could have carried deadly consequences for someone in crisis needing proper dosing.
Danny C. Williams Sr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, confirmed Hogsett pleaded guilty to Tampering with Consumer Products—a federal charge carrying severe penalties. United States District Court Judge James H. Payne will deliver her sentence on April 26, 2017.
“FDA oversees the U.S. supply of medicines to ensure that they are safe and effective, and those who knowingly tamper with medicines for patients put their health at risk,” said Spencer E. Morrison, Special Agent in Charge, FDA Office of Criminal Investigations’ Kansas City Field Office. “Our office will continue to pursue and bring to justice those who violate laws designed to protect the public health.”
The case was investigated by the FDA and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Neal C. Hong. It exposes a chilling breach of duty by a first responder sworn to protect lives—now facing federal judgment for betraying that oath.
