The indictment alleges that Petersen, along with others, engaged in a conspiracy to commit adoption fraud, money laundering, and wire fraud. The scheme involved bringing pregnant women from the Marshall Islands to the United States, where they gave birth and then placed their children up for adoption.
Petersen was arrested on August 19, 2019 and charged with multiple counts of conspiracy, adoption fraud, and money laundering. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of conspiracy and up to 10 years for each count of adoption fraud.
