GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — U.S. Attorney Mark Totten announced the sentencing of Joshua Brereton of Paw Paw, Michigan, to 60 months in prison and two years’ supervised release for his malicious act of setting fire to the Planned Parenthood clinic in Kalamazoo.
Brereton was also ordered to pay $32,699.45 in restitution for the damage he caused. Totten emphasized that violence is never an acceptable means to settle disputes, and that his office will hold wrongdoers accountable for political violence.
Craig Kailimai, ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge, highlighted the unacceptable nature of using arson as a tool for expressing anger towards individuals or businesses. He praised the partnership between federal, state, and local agencies in bringing Brereton to justice.
James A. Tarasca, FBI Special Agent in Charge for Michigan, emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe environment for those seeking reproductive health services. He vowed continued cooperation with law enforcement partners to address criminal activity related to differences of opinion.
KDPS Chief Dave Boysen expressed his department’s appreciation for the partnership with federal partners, leading to justice in their city. He thanked the U.S. Attorney’s Office for bringing Brereton to justice following his attempted arson.
Judge Paul L. Maloney noted the serious nature of the crime and emphasized the need for general deterrence. The conviction followed a joint investigation by ATF, FBI, and KDPS, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Carowan.
