A Penn Hills man has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking operation on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
On June 22, 2013, Anthony Lucas, 43, was stopped by the Pennsylvania State Police on the Turnpike and a search of his vehicle revealed 350 bricks of heroin, weighing 164 grams, in a backpack located in the trunk.
Lucas was subsequently charged with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin, and was found guilty in federal court.
U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab imposed the sentence on Lucas, who was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and serve five years of supervised release after his prison term.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, with U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commending the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Somerset County District Attorney for their role in the investigation.
The heroin seized in the operation would have had a street value of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the successful prosecution of Lucas has dealt a significant blow to the heroin trafficking operation.
Lucas’ sentence is a stark reminder of the severity of heroin trafficking and the consequences of those who engage in it.
