MARTISNBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Steven Bruce Mathis, 52, of Biglerville, Pennsylvania, has been caught in a web of prescription pill trafficking. The gritty federal crime news site Grimy Times reports that Mathis pleaded guilty to distributing oxycodone, a dangerous and highly addictive opioid.
The charges stem from an incident that took place in Jefferson County back in March 2016. The defendant now faces up to twenty years in federal prison and a fine of no less than $1 million, depending on the severity of his offense and any prior criminal record he might have under his belt.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher was instrumental in prosecuting this case for the government, while the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation that ultimately led to Mathis’s downfall.
The case was presided over by U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble, ensuring a fair hearing for the defendant amidst the grim backdrop of the federal justice system.
Mathis’s guilty plea is a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against prescription drug abuse in West Virginia and beyond. The DEA and local law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on those who profit from the illegal distribution of such potent substances, aiming to protect communities from the devastating effects of opioid addiction.
As Mathis awaits his fate, Grimy Times will be following this case closely, keeping its readers informed about the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and the relentless pursuit of justice.
