WASHINGTON D.C. – Robert Morss of Pennsylvania will spend the next five and a half years behind bars after being sentenced for his role in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The sentence, handed down this week, marks another conviction in the sprawling federal investigation into the riot that disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Morss wasn’t just a bystander. Federal prosecutors detailed how he illegally entered the Capitol grounds alongside a group of eight co-defendants, immediately joining the violent scrum that erupted in the tunnel area of the Lower West Terrace. It was a brutal scene, with officers desperately trying to hold the line against a surging mob intent on breaching security and disrupting the proceedings inside.
The feds presented evidence showing Morss actively attempting to arm the rioters and create a wider opening for the assault. He tried to steal a police baton, and crucially, ripped away a bike rack fence that served as a barrier, effectively clearing a path for more individuals to join the fray. This wasn’t a spontaneous act of protest; it was a calculated effort to overwhelm law enforcement and force their way into the Capitol.
The 66-month sentence isn’t just about the physical assault. Morss was convicted on charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon, obstructing an official proceeding, and even robbery – a clear indication of the seriousness with which the feds viewed his actions. He’ll also face 24 months of supervised release after his prison term and is ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.
Morss arrived at the Capitol decked out for a fight, sporting a vest equipped with body armor plates and carrying a knife sheath and scissors. He immediately positioned himself at the front of the mob, actively engaging with officers and escalating the violence. This wasn’t a peaceful demonstration; it was a deliberate attack on the heart of American democracy.
While Morss is now facing the consequences, he wasn’t working alone. Six of his eight co-defendants have already been sentenced, and three more are scheduled to stand trial later this year. The ongoing investigation continues to unravel the full scope of the conspiracy, with over 1,000 individuals arrested to date. Federal prosecutors vow to hold every participant accountable for their actions on that dark day.
The investigation remains active, and the feds are still seeking information on individuals involved in the breach. Anyone with tips or evidence is urged to contact the FBI or submit information online.
This case serves as a stark reminder that those who attempt to undermine our democratic institutions will face the full force of the law. The January 6th riot was a shameful chapter in American history, and the pursuit of justice for those involved is far from over.
