Stephen Jay Thorn, Threat to Judge, Florida 2024

A disturbing display of disrespect for the law landed a 66-year-old Pensacola man in hot water with federal authorities. Stephen Jay Thorn, 66, of Pensacola, has pleaded guilty to interstate transmission of a threat to injure a Federal District Court Judge.

According to court documents, Thorn made an interstate telephone call to the District Court Judge’s chambers on October 24, 2022, after reading a judicial opinion online that clearly didn’t sit well with him. Thorn left a vulgar, obscenity-laden voicemail threatening to harm the judge as well as members of the judge’s immediate family. The brazen threat sent shockwaves through the judiciary, and the United States Marshals Service quickly took notice.

The defendant’s actions have sparked outrage among law enforcement and court officials, who are calling for a swift and severe punishment. “Threats against judges and their families will not be tolerated,” said a spokesperson for the United States Attorney’s Office. “We will do everything in our power to protect our judges and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”

The case against Thorn was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, and it is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Joe Wheeler III. Thorn faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison, although a sentencing date has not yet been set.

The guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement, who have been working tirelessly to root out threats against judges and their families. “This case sends a clear message that threats against judges will be taken seriously and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said a spokesperson for the United States Marshals Service.

Thorn’s guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting the rule of law and the individuals who uphold it. As the case moves forward, one thing is clear: Thorn’s actions will have consequences, and those consequences will be severe.
