Pensacola Predator Whidden Gets 16 Years for Child Porn

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Donovan E. Whidden, 21, of Pensacola, Florida, is headed to federal prison for 16 years after pleading guilty to receiving child pornography. The sentence, handed down today, marks the latest chapter in a disturbing case that highlights the dark underbelly of online exploitation. U.S. Attorney Jason R. Coody announced the sentencing, vowing continued commitment to protecting vulnerable children.

“Protecting innocent children from sexual predators remains one of our highest priorities,” Coody stated bluntly. “I commend our law enforcement partners and prosecutors who work tirelessly to identify these predators and bring them to justice so that they may never exploit a child again. Due to their collective efforts, our community is safer, and this repeat offender is exactly where he belongs – behind bars.” Whidden’s history isn’t lost on investigators; he was already on state probation for a 2022 conviction for Promoting Sexual Performance by a Child when this new offense came to light.

The case unfolded in September 2023 when the Pensacola Police Department received “cybertips” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, tracing the illicit material back to Whidden’s residence. A subsequent search warrant revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior: Whidden was actively using the Discord platform to both upload and obtain child pornography, further concealing the evidence using a cloud storage platform. This wasn’t a passive reception of illegal content; Whidden was an active participant in its distribution.

Pensacola Police Chief Eric Randall didn’t mince words. “We must always protect our children. Our relentless pursuit to hunt down sexual predators remains a top priority for our law enforcement partners,” he said. “Let this sentence be a reminder to anyone that wants to hurt our children, we will find you and use every available law enforcement resource to get justice.” The investigation was a collaborative effort involving Homeland Security Investigations and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Northern Florida.

Beyond the 16-year prison sentence, Whidden faces a decade of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender, subject to all associated conditions. Nicholas Ingegno, Assistant Special Agent in Charge with HSI Tallahassee, condemned Whidden’s actions. “This recidivist predator once again showed no respect for humanity by actively collecting and trading child sexual abuse material online,” Ingegno stated. “Thanks to the investigative efforts of our persistent special agents and the Pensacola Police Department, this repeat offender will now spend well deserved time behind bars.”

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David L. Goldberg and Jessica S. Etherton as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. The Department of Justice launched the project in 2006, bringing together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute perpetrators and rescue victims.
