A California man has been slapped with federal charges for allegedly kidnapping his 6-year-old grandchild and transporting them to Peru, authorities announced Tuesday.
Edwin Alonso Cuadros Bravo, 54, and Yulisa Alexsandra Guevara Wintong, 49, both formerly residing in Sacramento, face a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine for their alleged roles in the November 2021 abduction.
According to court documents, the pair abducted their 6-year-old grandchild from Sacramento and took them to Peru, ignoring pleas from the child’s mother to return them to the United States.
Cuadros Bravo and Guevara Wintong were initially charged by criminal complaint in February 2022, but the child was not returned to the US until December 2022, thanks to government intervention.
Cuadros Bravo made his first federal court appearance in Sacramento on April 10, 2024, and was subsequently detained, remaining in custody to this day. Guevara Wintong has yet to appear in court to answer the charges against her.
The case is the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica M.A. Alegría is handling the prosecution.
The charges against Cuadros Bravo and Guevara Wintong are only allegations, and the pair are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Cuadros Bravo’s lawyer could not be reached for comment, but it’s clear that this case is far from over.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI or local authorities.
A representative for the US Attorney’s Office confirmed that the indictment is a significant development in the case.
