Pete Knight, Assaulting a Federal Officer, South Dakota 2017

A shocking incident in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has left authorities stunned as Pete Knight, a 54-year-old local man, has been charged with a serious crime. According to reports, Knight forcibly assaulted, resisted, opposed, impeded, and interfered with the Ziebach County Sheriff, as well as officers from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, while they were engaged in the performance of their official duties on May 8, 2017.

The maximum penalty for this crime is up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and up to $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Knight was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 14, 2017 and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on June 16, 2017, where he pled not guilty to the Indictment.

The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case.

Knight was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

The charges against Knight are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
