Grimy Times Exclusive: Felon Sentenced to 14 Years for Firearms
The Southern District of Alabama has seen its share of crime, but one case stands out for its brazen disregard for the law. Phay Lam Souphanthog, a 39-year-old resident of Irvington, Alabama, has been sentenced to 168 months in prison for his possession of firearms.
Souphanthog’s troubles began in 1999 when he was convicted of Manslaughter in the Circuit Court of Mobile County. However, it was his repeated run-ins with the law that led to his current predicament. Between 2015 and 2017, he was arrested three times for possession of firearms.
Despite his history, Souphanthog continued to disregard the law, leading to his indictment on three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A jury found him guilty on two of those counts in November 2018.
United States District Court Judge Kristi K. Dubose handed down the sentence, ordering Souphanthog to serve 84 months on each count, with the sentences running consecutively. Additionally, the judge ordered that Souphanthog, who is illegally in the United States, be surrendered to a duly authorized immigration official at the conclusion of his imprisonment for deportation. If deportation is unsuccessful, he will serve a three-year term of supervised release, which includes drug testing and treatment. Souphanthog was also ordered to pay $200 in special mandatory assessments.
The case was investigated by the Mobile Police Department, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, the Prichard Police Department, the MCSENT Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Gloria Bedwell prosecuted the case in the United States Attorney’s Office.
Souphanthog’s case serves as a reminder that the law is in place to protect society, and those who disregard it will be held accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
