Philly Firm Peddled Fake COVID Killers: Indictment

PHILADELPHIA, PA – A Cherry Hill, New Jersey man and his Philadelphia-based company are facing serious federal charges after allegedly peddling pesticide products with bogus claims of killing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the federal prosecutor announced today. ViaClean Technologies, LLC, and its founder, James Young, 46, were indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, mail fraud, and violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Sean Storrie, 59, of Philadelphia, was also named in the indictment, facing FIFRA violations related to the alleged scheme. The indictment details how Young and Storrie allegedly conspired to market registered pesticides with demonstrably false claims, preying on public fear during the height of the pandemic. These products were originally designed to combat odor-causing bacteria, mold, and algae, but were falsely advertised as effective against the COVID-19 virus.

“This wasn’t about legitimate public health measures,” a source close to the investigation told Grimy Times. “This was about exploiting a crisis for profit. They took products designed for one purpose and slapped a COVID-19 label on them, knowing full well it was a lie.” The alleged scheme involved misleading potential customers into believing the pesticides could kill the virus, a claim that was never substantiated and likely never tested.

All three defendants made initial appearances in federal magistrate court in Philadelphia today. ViaClean Technologies, LLC is scheduled for its initial appearance on September 5. The indictment further alleges misdemeanor FIFRA violations, claiming the defendants sold the pesticide products with claims that differed significantly from the approved master labels – a direct violation of federal regulations.

The investigation, a joint effort by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and the United States Postal Inspection Service, uncovered evidence suggesting a deliberate effort to deceive consumers. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth Abrams is prosecuting the case, and is expected to present a mountain of evidence detailing the alleged fraudulent practices.

It’s crucial to remember that these are merely accusations at this stage. James Young, Sean Storrie, and ViaClean Technologies, LLC are all presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, if convicted, they face significant penalties, including hefty fines and potential imprisonment. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
