PHILADELPHIA – A former guard at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility admitted today to a pattern of brutalizing inmates and then lying about it. Christopher Knight, 47, pleaded guilty to five counts of civil rights violations and two counts of falsifying records, bringing an end – but likely not closure – to a case that lays bare the unchecked power within prison walls.

According to court documents, Knight systematically pepper-sprayed five different inmates over a three-month span in early 2023, despite the fact that all were already subdued – lying prone with hands secured. The attacks weren’t isolated incidents; Knight repeatedly escalated the force even after inmates were handcuffed.

On January 8th, Knight unleashed pepper spray on a man lying face down, continuing the assault while handcuffing him. Two days later, he sprayed another handcuffed inmate being escorted by a colleague. The same day, a third inmate was sprayed while returning to his cell, and Knight kept spraying even after restraints were on.

The violence didn’t stop there. In March, Knight sprayed a man writing on paper – posing no immediate threat – continuing to blast him while he writhed on the floor. Just days later, he pepper-sprayed another inmate lying face down.

To conceal his actions, Knight filed falsified use-of-force reports, omitting crucial details about his unprovoked attacks. He’s due back in court July 15th and could face up to 90 years behind bars – a steep price, but one that does little to address the systemic issues within the Philadelphia prison system.

The FBI led the investigation, with help from the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Priya DeSouza and Michael Miller are prosecuting the case.
