Everett, WA – A despicable act of racial terrorism met its just end as Steven Goldstine, a 55-year-old resident of Everett, was today sentenced to five years in federal prison for using a pipe bomb to destroy the car of a Black couple. Goldstine’s malicious actions were fueled by his hatred for the victims’ race and his eagerness to cause fear and destruction.
The incident unfolded on December 31, 2024, when Goldstine detonated the pipe bomb, leaving the vehicle in ruins. The next day, the victims received a chilling message from Goldstine himself, filled with racial slurs and boasting about the attack. This cowardly act was meant to intimidate and terrorize.
In court, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division emphasized the severity of Goldstine’s crime. ‘This defendant turned his racial hatred into a potentially deadly explosion,’ said Dhillon. ‘We will not tolerate such hate-fueled acts.’
U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd for the Western District of Washington echoed these sentiments, stating that the defendant had acted on racial hatred and had called the victims to gloat after the attack.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, ATF, and the Everett Police Department. Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington of the FBI Seattle Field Office praised the joint efforts, saying, ‘Together with our partners, we will not stand for such violent intimidation.’
Everett Police Chief John DeRousse thanked all involved for their dedication to ensuring justice was served. ‘The victim showed resilience in the face of a senseless act meant to intimidate and divide,’ said DeRousse. ‘This sentence reinforces that everyone in our community deserves to feel safe.’
