PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a move that will add insult to injury for Lajwan McMillan, a 31-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, the former inmate has been hit with an additional five months of incarceration for possessing a cellular phone while behind bars.
According to sources, McMillan was found in possession of the contraband phone just three days after being sentenced to 18 months of incarceration for violating the conditions of his federal supervised release and being sent back to prison. Inmates in federal custody are strictly prohibited from possessing cellular phones, and this egregious breach of prison rules is punishable by additional, consecutive time in prison.
United States Chief District Judge Mark R. Hornak imposed the sentence on McMillan, who now faces a total of 23 months in prison for his latest transgression. McMillan’s possession of a cellular phone was discovered by officials at the Butler County Jail, where he was being held.
Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway prosecuted this case on behalf of the government, highlighting the severity of McMillan’s actions and the importance of maintaining order within our nation’s prison system.
United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan commended the United States Marshals Service, Butler County Detective Bureau, and officials at the Butler County Jail for their tireless efforts in investigating and prosecuting McMillan’s case, ultimately leading to his conviction and additional sentencing.
McMillan’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rules and a willingness to put himself and others at risk, earning him a stern rebuke from the justice system. As McMillan begins serving his additional time, it is clear that his failure to comply with prison regulations will have severe consequences.
In a statement, United States Attorney Olshan emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and secure prison environment, saying, “The Department of Justice will continue to hold accountable those who seek to undermine our justice system and put themselves and others at risk.”
