Warren Charles Green, IV, 30, of Pittsburgh, Pa., admitted in federal court to trafficking a kilogram or more of heroin, sealing his fate in a case that underscores the relentless grip of the opioid crisis in western Pennsylvania.
Green pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson in Johnstown, facing a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $4,000,000 fine. The plea was announced today by United States Attorney David J. Hickton, who called the distribution of such a massive quantity of heroin a direct assault on public safety.
The crime dates back to April 5, 2013, when Green was found in possession of the deadly drug with clear intent to distribute. A kilogram of heroin is not street-level dealing—it’s wholesale supply, capable of flooding neighborhoods with lethal doses and fueling addiction on a wide scale.
Judge Gibson has scheduled sentencing for February 28, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. While the law allows for life behind bars, the actual sentence will hinge on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, including the severity of the offense and Green’s criminal history, if any.
The investigation was a coordinated strike by the Pennsylvania State Police out of the Somerset Turnpike Barracks, working in tandem with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Their work dismantled a significant trafficking operation before it could deepen its roots in the region.
Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is prosecuting the case, sending a clear message: those who profit from the poison of heroin will face the full weight of federal justice.
