Platte Woods Business Owner Gets 1 Year for Tax Dodge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Platte Woods business owner is going down for tax evasion, big time.

A federal court sentenced 63-year-old Daniel Alan Ryan to one year in federal prison without parole for failing to pay more than $600,000 in federal income taxes over several years.

Ryan, owner of Ryan Roofing Systems, Inc., and Ryan Construction Systems, Inc., pleaded guilty to one count of failing to file a tax return. He also admitted to failing to file income tax returns and pay his personal income taxes over a period of many years.

According to court documents, IRS investigators started questioning Ryan about his non-payment of taxes in early 2012. This investigation continued over the following years. After this criminal investigation became known to him, Ryan failed to file income tax returns from 2015 through 2017, resulting in a tax loss over those years of $138,385.

That’s on top of the $487,627 in tax loss from 2009 through 2013. The total amount of tax loss: $626,012. Ryan was ordered to pay $20,000 in fines and the same amount in restitution, plus interest, to the IRS.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Daly. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation. The sentence sends a clear message: tax evasion will not be taken lightly.
