PROVIDENCE – In a stunning admission, Darren Camacho, 33, of Providence, has pleaded guilty to participating in a brazen mail theft ring at the U.S. Mail Processing and Distribution Center in Providence, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
The investigation into Camacho’s criminal activities revealed that he and his co-conspirators systematically targeted brightly colored envelopes, stuffing them into backpacks and slipping out of the facility multiple times a week between March 1, 2023, and June 26, 2023. Their nocturnal escapades culminated in meetings at a predetermined location, where they divided the spoils: cash, gift cards, and checks.
Camacho’s guilty plea encompasses charges of conspiracy to steal mail and theft of U.S. Mail by a postal employee. His sentencing is scheduled for November 13, 2025, with a federal district judge determining his fate based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
According to court documents, Camacho distributed some stolen gift cards to another individual and used others to make purchases across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The evidence against him mounted when law enforcement recovered 55 stolen gift cards from the residence of a relative on June 28, 2023.
This case is a testament to the diligent work of Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie M. White and the collaborative efforts of the US Postal Service Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Providence Police Department, and Smithfield Police Department.
