Purdie Admits to Fatal Union Station Beatdown

WASHINGTON – A D.C. man has admitted to delivering the fatal blows that claimed the life of Richard Lewis following a vicious assault outside Union Station in October 2016. Victor Purdie, 56, of Washington, D.C., pled guilty today to one count of voluntary manslaughter, bringing a measure of closure to a case marked by senseless brutality.

The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of October 2, 2016, at 50 Massachusetts Avenue, N.E. According to evidence presented by the government, Purdie engaged in a brief interaction with Lewis before a dispute erupted. The confrontation quickly escalated when Purdie landed a punch, sending Lewis crashing to the ground. What followed was a relentless and horrifying attack.

Purdie didn’t stop at one blow. He proceeded to repeatedly kick and punch Lewis, who lay unconscious and motionless, absorbing the full force of the assault. Witnesses described a disturbing scene, with an occupant of a nearby vehicle desperately laying on the horn, attempting to intervene and halt the attack. Purdie ignored the pleas, delivering one final kick before fleeing the scene, leaving Lewis for dead.

Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and immediately transported Lewis to a local hospital. He was admitted in critical condition, suffering from a fractured skull and severe hemorrhaging. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Lewis never regained consciousness. He was later transferred to a long-term healthcare facility, where, on January 6, 2017, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced the guilty plea, lauding the diligent work of the Metropolitan Police Department in investigating the case. He also extended his appreciation to Paralegal Specialists Zekiah Wright and Kelly Blakeney, Victim/Witness Specialist Marcia Rinker, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles J. Willoughby, Jr., for their contributions to the investigation and prosecution.

Purdie is scheduled to be sentenced on July 28, 2017, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable Jose M. Lopez will preside over the sentencing hearing. While a conviction has been secured, the family and friends of Richard Lewis are left to grapple with the devastating consequences of Purdie’s violent actions. This case serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of unchecked aggression on the streets of the nation’s capital.
