Two Honolulu police officers, John Rabago and Reginald Ramones, have been arrested and charged with civil rights violations in a federal court.
According to the indictment, Rabago and Ramones deprived an individual of his constitutional right to be free from an unreasonable seizure by a law enforcement officer on January 28, 2018.
The indictment alleges that the two officers acted under color of law to deprive the individual of his civil rights, and that they conspired to do so.
The maximum penalty for the charges is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, at this point, both officers are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case was investigated by the Honolulu Division of the FBI, and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Tim Visser of the Civil Rights Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Brady. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marion Percell also participated in the investigation.
Rabago and Ramones, both 43 years old, are expected to appear in court to face the charges.
The charges against Rabago and Ramones are a serious reminder that law enforcement officers are not above the law, and that they will be held accountable for any violations of civil rights.
As this case moves forward, the public will be closely watching to see how it unfolds.
