Radio Waves Crackle with Betrayal: Rum Gang’s $3.5M Whisky Heist Unravelled

In the dimly lit alleys of San Francisco’s bootlegging underworld, a tale of deceit and betrayal has unfolded. The Canadian rum syndicate, notorious for evading Uncle Sam’s Volstead Act, has been caught red-handed. The radio, once a reliable tool for illicit liquor traders, has turned against its dishonest users. On February 26, 1925, the Coast Guard cracked the code, capturing two of the syndicate’s prized ocean-going steamers, worth millions.

The masterminds behind the operation allegedly used the radio to circumvent the authorities, exploiting its honest reputation to further their nefarious activities. However, their plan backfired, and the Coast Guard seized a staggering 350,000 worth of prime Scotch whisky and two of their most valuable ships.

The Coal Harbor, a Canadian rum runner, is currently tied up at San Francisco’s famous Alleges wharf, with armed guards keeping a 24-hour watch over her decks. Below her, a treasure trove of illicit liquors worth 200,000 awaits its fate. Just a stone’s throw away, the Quadra, another Canadian rum runner, is also secured, carrying a cargo of 1.5 million dollars’ worth of illicit liquor.

The commanders of both ships maintained their innocence, claiming they were unaware of the illicit activities on board. However, the evidence speaks for itself, and the rum syndicate’s reputation has been left in tatters.

The Vancouver-based liquor exporting firm, suspected of being the destination for the syndicate’s exports, may face hefty fines and penalties, potentially exceeding $200,000. As the authorities tighten their grip on the bootlegging underworld, one thing is clear: the radio has become an unlikely ally in the fight against organized crime.
