LONDON, Ky. – Rafael Martinez, a 41-year-old Mexican national, faced the federal bench on Wednesday, where U.S. District Judge Robert Wier handed down a severe sentence of 77 months for illegal reentry into the United States following his conviction for child molestation.
Martinez, who was illegally residing in London at the time, had been removed to Mexico by U.S. authorities in August 2004 after serving time for his heinous crime in Grant County, Indiana. However, on September 14, 2018, Martinez returned to Kentucky, where he was arrested on new charges and identified as a previously removed alien.
According to the plea agreement, Martinez made no attempt to apply for re-admission to the United States before his arrest. His federal sentence was ordered to run consecutively to the prior state sentence he received in Kentucky.
The defendant is now required by federal law to serve 85 percent of his prison term, ensuring a lengthy stay behind bars.
C Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and LaDeon Francis, Director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE-ERO) Chicago Field Office, jointly announced Martinez’s sentence. The investigation was conducted by ICE-ERO, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Parman prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
The grim tale of Rafael Martinez’s illegal reentry underscores the ongoing efforts by federal authorities to combat immigration violations and ensure public safety.
