Federal Court Hands Down Harsh Sentences to Three Louisville Men for Fentanyl and Heroin Trafficking

In a major blow to the opioid epidemic, three Louisville men have been sentenced to federal prison for fentanyl and heroin trafficking related offenses. Ramontez Bell, 23, received a 5-year prison sentence, followed by 4 years of supervised release, for his involvement in the distribution of deadly fentanyl and heroin.

Bell’s troubles with the law began in 2019, when he was convicted of complicity to tampering with physical evidence in Jefferson Circuit Court. This felony conviction prohibited him from possessing a firearm, but he was found to be in possession of one anyway.

On July 27, 2023, Bell was sentenced for conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture and a mixture of heroin, possessing with the intent to distribute a fentanyl mixture, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Also on July 27, 2023, Duane Johnson, 33, received a 5-year prison sentence, followed by 4 years of supervised release, for conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture and a mixture of heroin.

Johnson’s case highlights the dangers of fentanyl and heroin trafficking, which continues to plague communities across the country. The consequences of these crimes are severe, and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.

In a separate case, Keidrick Grinstead, 33, was sentenced to 7 years in prison, followed by 4 years of supervised release, for conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture and a mixture of heroin. The FBI Louisville Field Office Safe Streets Task Force and LMPD investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Frank Dahl prosecuting the case.
