SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Christopher Geanakos, 30, of Rancho Cordova, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted today of receiving child pornography. U.S. District Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr. delivered the guilty verdict following a one-day bench trial, a swift condemnation of the depraved material found on his computer.
According to court evidence, law enforcement traced the distribution of illegal images through a file-sharing network directly back to a computer at Geanakos’s residence. The initial investigation flagged the location as a source for child pornography, setting the stage for a warranted search that uncovered a digital cesspool of abuse.
A forensic examination of Geanakos’s desktop computer confirmed the grim findings: multiple images and movies depicting child pornography had been downloaded between 2010 and 2013. The content wasn’t limited to older children; investigators discovered images depicting infant and toddler victims, amplifying the severity of the crime and the depravity of the defendant’s actions.
U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the conviction, highlighting the collaborative effort of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in bringing Geanakos to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Audrey B. Hemesath and Shelley D. Weger spearheaded the prosecution, meticulously building a case based on digital evidence.
Geanakos is scheduled to be sentenced on May 19, 2017, by Judge Burrell. He faces a minimum of five years behind bars and a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, along with a hefty $250,000 fine. The final sentence will be determined based on federal sentencing guidelines and statutory factors, leaving the ultimate decision in the hands of the court.
This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to aggressively combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project unites federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute predators, and to rescue victims.
