Clark Corbin, Heroin Trafficking, West Virginia 2023

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Another cog in the opioid machine is off the streets. Clark Corbin, 41, of Ranson, West Virginia, was sentenced today to 18 months behind bars for peddling heroin in Jefferson County, Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen confirmed.

The sentence, handed down in federal court, stems from a guilty plea entered by Corbin in December 2016. He admitted to knowingly distributing the deadly drug in February 2016, adding fuel to the already raging fire of the opioid crisis gripping the state. The details of the transaction – amount of heroin, exact location – remain sealed, but authorities confirm it was enough to warrant federal charges.

This wasn’t some small-time operation. Corbin was charged with “Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin,” a charge that carries significant weight, indicating authorities believed he wasn’t just a user, but an active participant in the supply chain. The feds weren’t messing around. This conviction sends a message, however hollow, that drug dealing will be met with federal prosecution.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul T. Camilletti and Lara Omps-Botteicher built the case, painstakingly gathering evidence and securing the conviction. The investigation itself was a joint effort, a testament to the collaboration between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies are stretched thin, but they continue to chase down these dealers, one at a time.

Chief U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the case, ultimately delivering the 18-month sentence. While some might see it as lenient, it’s a standard penalty for this type of offense, given federal sentencing guidelines. Corbin will now have time to reflect on his choices, although the impact on the community he poisoned remains.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in West Virginia. This is just one battle in a much larger war, and the casualties continue to mount. The question remains: will these sentences truly deter others, or will the flow of heroin continue unabated?
