Rapid City Man Charged with Gun Crimes: A 21-year-old Rapid City man has been indicted for possessing a firearm with an altered or obliterated serial number and for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Moses Crowe, 21, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 20, 2014, for violating federal firearm laws. Crowe appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on September 15, 2014, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Crowe was allegedly in possession of a firearm with the manufacturer’s serial number removed, altered, and obliterated on January 8, 2014. Crowe, who has a previous domestic abuse conviction, now faces a second charge of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride prosecuting the case.
Crowe was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charge is merely an accusation, and Crowe is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The indictment serves as a reminder of the severity of firearm laws and the consequences of violating them. As the case progresses, it will be interesting to see how the prosecution presents its case against Crowe.
