A Rapid City man has been convicted of a vicious attack on a park ranger at Horsethief Lake Campground.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy sentenced Cody Gallagher, 25, to 2 years’ probation with 4 months in home confinement after he pleaded guilty to Assault on a Federal Officer.
The incident occurred in July 2012 when Gallagher assaulted a park ranger who was attempting to make him vacate the area. Gallagher, who was 25 at the time of the crime, has now been held accountable for his actions.
Gallagher was ordered to pay $25 to the victims’ assistance fund as part of his sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service.
The park ranger, whose identity has not been released, was simply doing his job when he was attacked by Gallagher. The sentence sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The case highlights the importance of protecting law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect the public.
Gallagher’s conviction is a reminder that those who commit crimes against federal officers will face the full weight of the law.
