Shaun Jason Meyer, Failure to Register as Sex Offender, South Dakota 2013

Rapid City Man Jailed for Failure to Register as Sex Offender

A Rapid City man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Shaun Jason Meyer, 36, was handed down the sentence by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken in the U.S. District Court on April 2, 2013.

Meyer was required to register as a sex offender, but he failed to update his registration with the State of South Dakota between November 2011 and June 2012. This failure to register led to his indictment by a federal grand jury on June 19, 2012.

Meyer pleaded guilty to the charges on August 29, 2012. His imprisonment and supervised release were ordered by the court, in addition to a $100 payment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

According to the court records, Meyer was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case, which resulted in Meyer’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.

The U.S. Marshals Service immediately took Meyer into custody after the sentencing. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender and updating registration information as required by law.

The community relies on accurate and up-to-date registration information to ensure public safety. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in severe consequences, as seen in the case of Shaun Jason Meyer.
