Rapid City Man Jailed for Illegally Possessing Firearm

A Rapid City man has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. Matthew Dubray, age 36, was found to have been in possession of a Hi-Point, model C9, 9 mm pistol in July 2016, despite being a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms.

According to U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons, Dubray was charged on January 24, 2017, and subsequently sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, on August 6, 2018. In addition to his 14-month prison sentence, Dubray was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 2 years of supervised release.

The case against Dubray was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.

The investigation into Dubray’s firearm possession was led by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuting the case. Dubray was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
