Raylene C. Chips, 24, of Rapid City, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to a Superseding Information charging her with Simple Assault, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 6 months’ imprisonment, a $5,000 fine or both, and a period of supervised release of not more than 1 year.
The conviction stems from an incident on May 4, 2012, when a car in which Chips was riding came upon two women walking along a road in Mission, South Dakota. Two occupants of the vehicle exited and confronted the victim, leading to a fight in which Chipps joined and assaulted the victim. As a result, the victim sustained a broken jaw, among other injuries.
The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, who worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victim. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley, who has a proven track record of holding individuals accountable for their crimes.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date has not been set for Chips, who was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing. The defendant’s fate will be determined by a judge, but one thing is certain: justice will be served.
The incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. It is a testament to the bravery of the victim and the dedication of law enforcement agencies like the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
Chips’ guilty plea marks a significant milestone in the case, and it is a step towards closure for the victim and their loved ones. However, the true test of justice will come at sentencing, when a judge will determine the extent of Chips’ punishment.
In the meantime, the community can take comfort in knowing that justice is being served. The case serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated and that those who commit crimes will be held accountable.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley has stated that he is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case. ‘We are pleased that the defendant has taken responsibility for her actions,’ he said. ‘We look forward to a successful sentencing and a safe and just outcome for the victim.’
