A 27-year-old Abington man, Rashaad Schell, was sentenced to 24 months of probation with six months of in-home detention for knowingly making false statements to obtain unemployment compensation.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge John E Jones, III, on Friday, February 22, 2024, at the United States Courthouse in Harrisburg.
Schell, who worked as a mail handler for the Abington Post Office from February 2012 through September 2013, obtained unemployment compensation from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry during the same period.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Schell’s actions resulted in a loss of $18,421 to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
Judge Jones ordered Schell to repay the full amount of restitution as part of his sentence.
The case was investigated by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.
Assistant United States Attorney Chelsea Schinnour prosecuted the case, which highlights the importance of upholding the integrity of the unemployment compensation system.
The sentence brings an end to a case that demonstrates the consequences of committing unemployment compensation fraud, a serious crime with significant consequences for individuals and the community.
