A federal postal worker in Massachusetts was left battered and bruised after a violent encounter with a Winchester man who demanded a package and assaulted the worker.
Raymond Acevedo, 29, pleaded guilty to robbing a federal postal worker, assaulting a federal postal worker, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young to five years in prison and four years of supervised release.
Acevedo was also ordered to pay a fine of $10,000. The incident occurred on Oct. 24, 2019, when a uniformed U.S. postal worker attempted to deliver an Express Mail package from Puerto Rico to an addressee in Dorchester. When the postal worker couldn’t locate the addressee, Acevedo approached the worker and demanded the package.
The postal worker refused to give Acevedo the package, leading to a violent altercation. Acevedo took the package and attacked the postal worker, who used his phone to take pictures of the stolen package and the vehicle Acevedo was driving. Acevedo then attacked the worker again and took his phone, leading to another fight.
As the postal worker and Acevedo were fighting over the package, police arrived and arrested Acevedo. The postal worker was transferred to a local hospital for the injuries he received during the altercation.
On Oct. 25, 2019, law enforcement officers opened the package pursuant to a federal search warrant and seized approximately 1.390 kilograms of cocaine. Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Acting Commissioner Gregory Long made the announcement.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Mendell’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.
