Defendant Used Counterfeit Credit Card to Purchase Over $15,000 in Goods
Raymond Hasaan Matthews, 37, of Oaklyn, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 18 months of probation for using a fake American Express credit card to buy goods in Pittsburgh-area stores.
According to the information presented to the court, Matthews used the counterfeit credit card in November 2011 at Casa D’Oro Jewelers to purchase two watches totaling approximately $15,605.00. He also used the card at other stores, including Dicks Sporting Goods and Home Depot, to purchase additional merchandise.
Matthews was sentenced by United States District Judge Terrence F. McVerry on the conviction of access device fraud.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the United States Secret Service for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Matthews.
Mattews’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the financial security of consumers. His punishment is a reminder that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
