Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands 30-Month Sentence in Hammond
Hammond, IN – In a move aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, Rene Patterson, 32, of Merrillville, Indiana, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Patterson, who was found to be in possession of a semiautomatic pistol and two extended magazines of ammunition in June 2013, had previously been convicted in 2006 for carrying a handgun without a license.
The investigation into Patterson’s case was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tom McGrath.
District Court Judge ruled Patterson would serve 3 years of supervised release after completing his 30-month sentence. The case was the result of a thorough investigation and a commitment to keeping the community safe.
This case serves as a reminder that those who have been convicted of a felony will be held accountable for their actions and will face the consequences for attempting to possess firearms.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who break the law are brought to justice and that our communities remain safe.
