Keith Moreno, Vandalizing a Federal Courthouse, Nevada 2020

Reno, Nev. – Keith Moreno, a 28-year-old local resident, pleaded guilty to damaging the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Courthouse in the late evening of May 30, 2020, following a protest relating to the May 25, 2020 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

According to court documents and admissions made in court, Moreno threw a cigarette receptacle, weighing about 23 pounds, and a rock through the first floor windows near the front entrance of the courthouse. Moreno broke at least one of the courthouse windows.

Moreno pleaded guilty to one count of Destruction of Government Property. He is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb on September 16, 2021. Moreno faces a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada and Special Agent in Charge Aaron C. Rouse for the FBI made the announcement. This case is the product of an investigation by the FBI, Nevada Attorney General’s Office, Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and U.S. Marshals Service.

Moreno’s actions resulted in significant damage to the courthouse, causing harm to the government property.

The guilty plea is a reminder of the importance of respecting public property and the consequences of destructive behavior.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou said, “We appreciate the hard work of our law enforcement partners in investigating this case and bringing the perpetrator to justice.”
