Rex A. Hopper, Methamphetamine Conspiracy, Illinois 2018

A federal jury in Benton, Illinois, slammed the door on Rex A. Hopper, 44, of Creal Springs, convicting him on February 28, 2018, of conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine—a charge tied to a sprawling drug network that pumped poison through Williamson and Franklin Counties for over two years.

The indictment traces Hopper’s criminal conduct from January 2015 to May 31, 2017, painting a picture of sustained drug distribution across southern Illinois. Authorities say Hopper wasn’t just a player—he was part of a coordinated operation moving heavy quantities of high-purity meth, fueling addiction and destabilizing communities.

Hopper was taken into federal custody immediately after the verdict and remains locked up awaiting sentencing on June 6, 2018. He now faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years behind bars, followed by four years of strict supervised release, and a gut-punch fine of up to $5,000,000.

The takedown was the result of a long-term, multi-agency dragnet led by the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force and the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, with critical support from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Coordination between federal and local prosecutors proved pivotal in building a case that withstood trial scrutiny.

Williamson and Franklin County States Attorneys also played key roles, helping untangle the web of transactions, communications, and deliveries that tied Hopper directly to the conspiracy. Investigators used wiretaps, controlled buys, and cooperating witnesses to map the operation from stash house to street corner.

U.S. Attorney Donald S. Boyce, overseeing the Southern District of Illinois, confirmed the conviction and vowed continued crackdowns on drug trafficking in the region. ‘This verdict sends a clear message,’ Boyce stated. ‘We will dismantle these networks, one conviction at a time.’
