A 35-year-old Dominican man faces up to 20 years in prison for reentering the US after deportation, announced the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Reynoso Matos, also known as Julio Eliezer Minyettis, was charged with illegal reentry after having been previously deported and convicted of an aggravated felony involving the trafficking of controlled substances, according to court documents.
A Grand Jury in Scranton returned an Indictment charging Matos with the crime, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), with Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Olshefski assigned to the prosecution.
Matos, a native and citizen of the Dominican Republic, is presumed innocent until found guilty in court, where he could face imprisonment, a fine, and supervised release.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, the judge will consider factors such as the nature and seriousness of the offense, Matos’ history and characteristics, and the need to punish and protect the public.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasizes that an indictment is only an allegation, and Matos is entitled to a fair trial and due process.
