BEAUMONT, Texas – Moses Ray Rhine, Jr., 21, has pleaded guilty to multiple armed convenience store robberies that terrorized Southeast Texas in January 2021.
According to court documents, Rhine and others conspired to commit at least five armed robberies of convenience stores located in Southeast Texas from January 11 to January 21, 2021. The stores, which were engaged in interstate commerce and employed clerks at the time of the robberies, were equipped with functioning surveillance cameras that recorded the crimes.
Local and federal agents interviewed Rhine, who confessed to his role in the robberies. Rhine’s operation was to plunder, said Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. ‘This case was more than just a garden-variety market robbery by a junior varsity robber. Rhine and his crew robbed convenience stores across the Beaumont community.’
Thanks to the excellent work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Beaumont Police Department, Rhine’s robbery crew has been neutralized and their robbery spree has been brought to an end.
Rhine was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 2, 2021, and faces up to life in federal prison. The sentencing will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.
Rhine’s guilty plea comes as a relief to the community, who were terrorized by the string of robberies. ‘Thanks to the dedication of law enforcement, justice has been served,’ said Ganjei.
The case is being investigated by the Beaumont Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Ross.
