Rhode Island Man Pleads Guilty to Fentanyl Smuggling

PROVIDENCE, RI – In a groundbreaking plea deal, Felix Suarez, 25, from Providence, has admitted to shipping fentanyl to Australia, marking a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking. According to United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha, Suarez stands accused of conspiracy and attempts to distribute the deadly substance.

The defendant, charged with five counts in a federal indictment, is scheduled for sentencing on August 1, 2024. His fate will be determined by a federal district judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

On December 30, 2022, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted an outbound parcel containing 37 grams of fentanyl destined for Sydney from Providence via FedEx. Another package, mailed on January 17, 2023, was also seized by Australian Federal Police, containing approximately 25 grams of the same drug.

Investigations revealed that Suarez had shipped at least 67 parcels to the same address in Sydney between January 2020 and January 2023. Each package was labeled as ‘DOCUMENTS/PAPER’ and contained similar weights, indicating a sophisticated operation.

The surveillance footage from the UPS store in Providence shows Suarez manipulating an envelope that matched one of those seized by Australian authorities. The investigation also uncovered that Suarez had used communication facilities to facilitate the distribution of the controlled substance.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr. is prosecuting the case in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Protection, and the Providence Police Department, played crucial roles in this investigation.
