Samuel Calvin Richardson, Jr., Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Arkansas 2015

Samuel Calvin Richardson, Jr., a 33-year-old man from Crossett, Arkansas, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The sentence was handed down by The Honorable Judge Susan O. Hickey in the United States District Court in El Dorado.

According to court records, the incident that led to Richardson’s arrest occurred on April 6, 2015, when Crossett Police responded to a call of shots fired near a school in Crossett. Multiple officers responded and found Richardson and another individual in the parking lot, noting a strong smell of alcohol. When an officer advised Richardson that he was going to pat him down for weapons, Richardson became uncooperative and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers caught up to Richardson and took him to the ground when he began reaching for his waistband and refused to bring his hands behind his back. During the pat-down, officers found a 9 mm pistol in a holster under Richardson’s jacket, as well as a badge. The weapon had a live round in the chamber with four rounds in the magazine.

Richardson was mirandized and interviewed the next day, at which time he admitted to being a felon and knowing that he shouldn’t have possessed the firearm. He claimed to have found the gun in a house he had recently moved into. However, Richardson had a prior felony conviction for Felon in Possession of a Firearm in January 2014, which was punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year.

Richardson was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2015 and pleaded guilty to the charge in November 2015. The case was investigated by the Crossett Police Department, and Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin Wulff prosecuted the case for the United States.

In addition to the 37-month prison sentence, Richardson was also sentenced to three years of supervised release. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the public from individuals who illegally possess firearms.
