Richmond Felon Convicted for Possessing Firearm

A federal jury in Richmond has convicted 32-year-old Rashad Laroy Ebron of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a serious charge that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

According to court records, Ebron was driving a car at a high rate of speed and running stop signs in the Fairfield Court community when Richmond Police officers attempted to stop him. Ebron suddenly stopped his car, exited the vehicle, and tossed something onto the floorboard before locking the car and claiming he couldn’t unlock it.

Officers observed a 9mm handgun in plain view on the floorboard of the vehicle, and despite Ebron’s protestations, they were able to identify him as a convicted felon. The officers arrested Ebron, located the car keys, unlocked the vehicle, and recovered the firearm.

Ebron has a long history of run-ins with the law, having been convicted of grand larceny in 2011, evading police in 2013, and robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in 2016. As a previously convicted felon, Ebron is not permitted to possess a firearm or ammunition.

The conviction comes after a guilty verdict was delivered by a federal jury yesterday. Ebron is scheduled to be sentenced on September 29.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Olivia L. Norman and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Groover, an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney with the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Office.
