Ringgold Felon Sentenced for Illegal Pistol Possession

SHREVEPORT, La. – In a hard-hitting blow against gun violence in the state, a Ringgold, Louisiana man has been handed a 36-month sentence for illegally possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony.

Jason Edward Myers, 42, faced U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote for his crime of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The defendant also received three years of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit the Ruger, Model LCP .380 caliber pistol seized during the investigation.

According to court documents from an August 17, 2016 guilty plea, law enforcement agents were tipped off that Myers intended to sell drugs and a pistol in Ringgold. An undercover operation led to the observation of Myers selling the firearm on December 11, 2015, at Layfield Road in the town. Upon his arrest, Myers confessed to being a convicted felon.

This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative aiming to reduce gun crimes by preventing felons and unauthorized individuals from possessing firearms. The ATF and Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Tennille M. Gilreath prosecuted the case.

United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley emphasized the importance of such efforts in curbing firearm-related violence, stating that the sentence reflects the government’s commitment to keeping dangerous individuals off the streets and reducing gun crime across Louisiana.
