Rite Aid Corporation and its subsidiaries are facing a massive $5 million fine for breaching the Controlled Substances Act in eight states.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the penalties following an investigation that revealed a string of violations, including filling prescriptions without medical necessity and failing to report thefts of controlled substances.
Under the compliance plan, Rite Aid must implement strict tracking systems and DEA-mandated procedures to prevent future infractions.
DEA Acting Administrator Michele M. Leonhart emphasized the need for pharmacies to uphold the law, stating that the settlement underscores the fight against prescription drug abuse.
