River of Death Claims Six in Delaware River Tragedy

On October 23, 1905, in a chilling display of fate’s capricious nature, a seemingly idyllic pleasure launch carrying nine men from Philadelphia plowed headlong into a stationary barge in the Delaware River, opposite Beverly, New Jersey. Six of the unsuspecting passengers met their watery demise, their bodies succumbing to the unforgiving currents of the Delaware River. The harrowing incident unfolded in broad daylight, leaving stunned witnesses to ponder the cruel hand of fate that had brought such calamity upon the small group of men.

The ill-fated launch, captained by the seasoned mariner, John Winch, had set out from Philadelphia with eight other men, mostly from the northeastern part of the city, including his own son. The crew’s day had been spent in leisurely fashion, anchored near Croyden, on the Pennsylvania side of the river. It was not until late in the afternoon, as the group began their return journey, that their tranquility was shattered by a catastrophic collision with the barge, being towed by the tugboat Bristol under the command of Captain…

As the launch, now crippled and helpless, careened out of control, Captain Winch, along with two other survivors, W.F. Russell and J. Rutherford, were tossed into the churning waters, clinging to life amidst the chaos. Miraculously, the crew of the tugboat Bristol, who had been towing the barge, responded quickly to the distress call, expertly maneuvering their vessel to pluck the three beleaguered survivors from the Delaware’s unforgiving grasp. The rescue effort, however, came too late for the six doomed passengers, who slipped beneath the waves, their bodies lost to the depths.

The six victims of this tragic incident have been identified as William Winch, the captain’s son; John Bills; John Stevenson; Samuel Herron; Norman Delaney; and James Yonkers. As investigators sift through the evidence, the question on everyone’s mind remains: what led to this terrible collision? Was it an accident, or was it something more sinister at play? One thing is certain – the Delaware River has claimed six more souls, a grim reminder of the unforgiving power that lies at the heart of the mighty waterway.
