On July 9, 2019, Robert Alford, a 35-year-old resident of Baltimore, Maryland, was arraigned in the Maryland Federal District Court on charges of violent crimes.
The charges filed against Alford included attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to court documents, the crimes were allegedly committed on February 2019, in Baltimore County. The alleged victims were left with serious injuries, including gunshot wounds.
Alford’s arrest was the result of an investigation by the Baltimore County Police Department, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The case was presided over by U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas, who set a trial date for October 2019.
However, as the trial approached, Alford entered into a plea agreement, which allowed him to plead guilty to a reduced charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. In exchange, the other charges were dropped.
On October 15, 2019, Alford was sentenced to 60 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment fee.
The plea agreement was seen as a strategic move by Alford’s defense team, who likely recognized that the evidence against him was strong and that a conviction on the original charges would have resulted in a significantly longer prison sentence.
