A shocking case of corruption within the US Navy has come to light as former Chief Warrant Officer Robert Gorsuch pleaded guilty to receiving over $45,000 in bribes from foreign defense contractor Leonard Francis. Gorsuch, a senior officer in the Seventh Fleet, was accused of trading military secrets and influence for lavish gifts and stays at luxurious hotels.

The scandal, which has resulted in federal criminal charges against 34 Navy officials, defense contractors, and the GDMA corporation, has left many reeling. So far, 26 of those charged have pleaded guilty, admitting to accepting millions of dollars in luxury travel, accommodations, meals, and services of prostitutes from Francis in exchange for helping GDMA win and maintain contracts and overbill the Navy by over $35 million.

Gorsuch, who served as the Seventh Fleet’s Flag Administration Officer from January 2005 to March 2008, admitted to receiving the following bribes from Francis:

– A stay at the Manila Hotel in Manila, Philippines, for which Francis paid expenses totaling approximately $15,000.

– A stay at the Shangri-La Hotel in Cebu, Philippines.

– A stay at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

– A dinner at Altitude Shangri-La in Sydney, Australia.

– A two-night stay at the Ritz Carlton in Tokyo.

Gorsuch reciprocated by sending Francis disks containing classified ship schedules for the Navy’s Seventh Fleet.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman, Gorsuch ‘essentially sold his honor for a few nights at the Shangri-La.’ He added that Gorsuch ‘sacrificed his integrity for so little and caused so much harm in the process.’

Gorsuch’s plea agreement admitted to the following crimes: bribery and conspiracy.

The case is a stark reminder of the corruption that can occur within the highest echelons of power. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what other shocking revelations will come to light.
