BALTIMORE, MD – Robert Hopewell, 27, of Baltimore, has confessed to federal charges stemming from the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced Friday. The case underscores the continued flow of illegal weapons onto Baltimore’s streets and the ongoing battle to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons.
According to court documents, the trouble began February 8, 2022, when Baltimore Police initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Hopewell. The reason? An illegally tinted windshield. What started as a routine traffic violation quickly escalated when officers detected a strong smell of marijuana. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded not only marijuana shavings and a bag of suspected cocaine, but also a hidden 9mm pistol loaded with seventeen rounds of ammunition. The weapon was discovered concealed behind a loose plastic panel in the center console.
Hopewell admitted to authorities that he was aware he was legally barred from possessing a firearm due to a prior felony conviction. Details of that conviction were not immediately released. The discovery of the loaded weapon, coupled with the narcotics, paints a grim picture of Hopewell’s activities and adds to the city’s already staggering statistics on gun-related violence. The ATF’s Baltimore Field Division played a key role in the investigation alongside the Baltimore Police Department.
Federal prosecutors have reached a plea agreement with Hopewell, recommending a sentence of no more than 78 months in federal prison. Chief U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar has scheduled sentencing for June 6, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Whether the judge will accept the recommended sentence remains to be seen, but the case sends a clear message that illegal gun possession will be aggressively prosecuted.
U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron highlighted that this case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through coordinated law enforcement efforts and community engagement. The program seeks to build trust between police and residents while strategically targeting the most dangerous offenders.
The investigation was led by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tsuei. While authorities commend the work of the ATF and Baltimore Police, the grim reality is that for every gun seized, another likely appears on the streets. The fight to reclaim Baltimore’s neighborhoods from gun violence is far from over, and this case is just one battle in a much larger war.
