A shocking case of theft and deception has come to light in Vermont, as Robert Mackenzie, a 62-year-old man from Fletcher, was sentenced for his role in stealing Oxycodone from parcels sent through the U.S. mail.
According to court records and proceedings, Mackenzie, who was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a Rural Carrier Associate, stole Oxycodone for his personal use on at least six separate occasions. The parcels containing controlled substances were supposed to be delivered by Mackenzie, but instead, he stole them for his own benefit.
Mackenzie’s actions were discovered, and he lost his job as a result. However, his troubles did not end there. He was subsequently charged with one count of possession of Oxycodone and pleaded guilty to the offense.
On October 18, 2017, Mackenzie was sentenced in United States District Court in Burlington, Vermont, to serve a one (1) year term of probation. Chief U.S. District Judge Christina Reiss also ordered Mackenzie to perform 40 hours of community service during his term of probation and to pay a $25 special assessment.
The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont commended the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, in the investigation and prosecution of Mackenzie.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara A. Masterson handled the prosecution of Mackenzie, while Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven L. Barth represented him in court. Mackenzie’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of theft and deception, and serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior.
The case is a notable example of the importance of the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General in preventing and detecting crimes committed by postal employees.
