FARGO – A California man has been sentenced to 12 months of electronic home monitoring and three years of supervised release for his role in a Medicare fraud scheme that cost the program $400,000.
Robert Olie, 66, of Torrance, California, was sentenced on March 3, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Erickson for conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
Olie was also ordered to pay $417,000 in restitution, including $100,000 in forfeiture of assets, as well as a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victims Fund.
The scheme, which involved the operation of Chikanel Medical Supplies in Long Beach, California, between 2008 and 2009, submitted claims for power wheelchairs that were either not provided to Medicare beneficiaries or were not medically necessary.
According to court documents, Olie submitted more than $1.2 million worth of claims to Medicare through its contractor, Noridian Healthcare Solutions, LLC, a North Dakota-based company.
The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Greenley prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
Olie pleaded guilty on November 18, 2013, and was sentenced on March 3, 2014.
